FCI Victorville Medium I is one of two medium-security institutions that make up the Victorville federal complex in San Bernardino County, California. It opened alongside the rest of the complex in 2004, on land that used to be George Air Force Base before the base was decommissioned in the early 1990s. Medium I houses male inmates and, like its sister facility Medium II, was built with a rated capacity in the range of a bit over a thousand men, reflecting how much the Bureau of Prisons was expanding capacity in California during that period. The Victorville site was chosen partly because the government already owned the former base property, which made it cheaper and faster to build multiple institutions there at once. There isn't much distinct, separate history for Medium I on its own since it was planned and constructed as part of the larger complex alongside the penitentiary and Medium II. For families, the main thing to keep straight is that Medium I is a separate mailing address and visitation schedule from the other Victorville units, even though they sit close together on the same grounds in the desert northeast of Los Angeles.
