FCC Victorville is a federal correctional complex in the high desert of San Bernardino County, California, built on part of the old George Air Force Base after that base closed in the early 1990s. The Bureau of Prisons opened the complex in 2004 to relieve overcrowding at other West Coast institutions, and it was designed from the start as a multi-level campus rather than a single prison: it groups together a high-security penitentiary, two medium-security institutions, and a minimum-security camp on one shared piece of land. Roughly 1,400 inmates were transferred in from the aging penitentiary at Lompoc when Victorville came online, making it one of the larger federal prison hubs to open in the 2000s. Because it holds several distinct facilities side by side, families sometimes find the mailing addresses and visiting rules confusing, so it helps to know exactly which unit (USP, Medium I, Medium II, or camp) a loved one is assigned to. The complex sits about 85 miles northeast of Los Angeles, in a stretch of Mojave Desert town that grew up around the old air base.
