FCI Tucson is a medium-security federal prison for men located within Tucson, Arizona's city limits, about 10 miles southeast of downtown. It opened in March 1982, originally designed as a metropolitan correctional center with a smaller capacity than it holds today. Because of that original design, part of its role has historically included housing pretrial detainees connected to federal court proceedings in the District of Arizona, along with sentenced inmates serving time or waiting to be transferred elsewhere in the system, so the population mix here can differ from a typical long-term medium-security prison. It's also part of the larger FCC Tucson complex, sharing the site with the newer, higher-security USP Tucson. There isn't a particularly dramatic historical event tied to FCI Tucson the way there is with some older federal penitentiaries; it has functioned steadily as a working medium-security institution for over 40 years. Its in-city location is a genuine convenience for visiting family members compared to many federal prisons situated in remote, rural areas.
