FCI Three Rivers is a medium-security federal prison for men in Live Oak County, Texas, roughly midway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. Construction began in February 1989 and wrapped up in October 1990, with the facility opening its doors to its first inmates in January 1991 — a fairly typical example of the wave of federal prisons built in Texas during that era. It also has an adjacent minimum-security camp. The facility's most serious documented incident came in 2008, when a riot broke out between rival prison gangs, leaving 22 inmates injured and resulting in one death. Aside from that event, Three Rivers has generally operated as a standard medium-security institution within the federal system, without the kind of extended historical narrative attached to some of the older penitentiaries. For families, its South Texas location places it within a few hours' drive of both San Antonio and Corpus Christi, which can make visiting somewhat more feasible than facilities in more remote parts of the state.
