FCI Tallahassee is one of the oldest federal prisons still operating for women, having opened in January 1938. It's a low-security facility, notable for being one of only a small handful of federal institutions in the country dedicated specifically to female inmates — the others are in Aliceville, Alabama; Dublin, California; and Waseca, Minnesota. There's also an adjacent detention unit on the same site holding male inmates at the administrative security level, so the complex serves more than one population. Over the decades the facility has held a range of well-known inmates, most recently drawing national attention as the site holding Ghislaine Maxwell following her sex-trafficking conviction. In recent years, oversight reports and inspections have also flagged real concerns about aging infrastructure at Tallahassee — issues like pest problems, mold, unreliable water systems, and chronic understaffing have been documented. For families, it's worth knowing this is an older facility with a long institutional history, and like many aging BOP sites, it has faced genuine scrutiny over maintenance and staffing in recent years.
