FCI Oxford is a federal prison located near the community of Oxford in Adams County, Wisconsin, and it has been operating since 1973, making it one of the older institutions still active in the upper Midwest. An adjacent minimum-security satellite camp was added later, opening in 1985, giving the site two connected levels of custody on one campus. For most of its history Oxford operated as a medium-security institution, but in June 2023 the Bureau of Prisons announced it would reclassify the main facility down to low security, a notable shift in how the prison is used and who is housed there. Today it holds roughly 1,000 inmates between the main institution and its camp. Oxford doesn't carry the kind of dramatic single event that defines some federal prisons' public reputation; its history is really one of steady, decades-long operation as a mid-sized Midwestern institution that has adapted its security classification over time as the Bureau's needs have changed.
