FCI Lompoc II is a low-security federal prison for male inmates and, together with FCI Lompoc I, makes up part of the larger Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex near Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The site dates back to 1959, when it opened on land that had previously served as a military disciplinary barracks on Camp Cooke. Over the decades the facility's security designation shifted more than once — it operated at high, then medium, security levels before eventually being reclassified as low-security, which reflects a broader pattern across the federal system of institutions being repurposed as security needs and inmate populations changed over time. It's one of the larger facilities in the complex, with a combined population including its satellite minimum-security camp running into the thousands of inmates in recent counts, making it a significant piece of the overall Lompoc complex's capacity. Its long operating history and multiple security reclassifications give it a somewhat more layered institutional story than many newer, single-purpose federal prisons, even though it now functions as a standard low-security compound with typical BOP programming.
