FCI Greenville is a medium-security federal prison for male inmates located in Bond County, Illinois, about 43 miles east of St. Louis. It opened in 1994 and, notably, includes an adjacent satellite camp that was converted specifically into a women's minimum-security facility in 2000, a change made to create more housing capacity for female offenders in the north-central United States at a time when women's federal bed space was in short supply. That means Greenville is somewhat unusual among FCIs in actually housing both a men's medium-security population and a separate women's minimum-security camp on one property, even though the two operate independently. The institution drew national attention in 2001 when David Mack, a former LAPD officer tied to the Rampart corruption scandal, was seriously injured in a stabbing attack by fellow inmates while jogging on the recreation yard, an incident widely covered in the press at the time. Outside of that episode, Greenville has functioned as a fairly typical rural Midwestern medium-security institution, offering standard educational, vocational, and reentry programs.
