FCI Fairton is a medium-security federal prison for male inmates situated in Fairfield Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey, roughly 50 miles southeast of Philadelphia and 40 miles west of Atlantic City. The main institution opened in 1990, and a minimum-security satellite camp was added on the same grounds in 1992, giving the complex a layered setup that today houses somewhere around 1,460 inmates combined. What sets Fairton apart from a typical FCI is that it also contains a separate, self-contained medium-security unit built specifically to house inmates enrolled in the federal Witness Security Program, meaning part of the compound operates under extra layers of separation and confidentiality. Over the decades the facility has held a number of higher-profile individuals, including former congressman George Santos and mob figure Nicodemo Scarfo Jr., which has periodically brought media attention to the site. As with many BOP institutions, it has also dealt with occasional staff corruption cases, such as an officer caught smuggling contraband in 2012.
