FCC Coleman is one of the largest federal prison complexes in the country, sitting on a large tract in rural Sumter County, Florida, roughly midway between Orlando, Tampa, and Ocala. It grew in phases rather than opening all at once: FCI Coleman Low came online in 1995, FCI Coleman Medium followed in 1996, and the two high-security penitentiaries, USP Coleman I and USP Coleman II, were added in the early 2000s to handle a growing population of higher-security offenders. Today the complex brings together a low-security institution, a medium-security institution, two U.S. penitentiaries, and an adjacent minimum-security camp, together holding thousands of inmates across the full range of federal security classifications. Its rural, out-of-the-way location was chosen partly for security and partly to keep a facility of this size away from dense population centers. Because Coleman houses so many different security levels on one campus, it's common for families to have loved ones move between its individual units as classification or programming needs change, which can make it a bit confusing to track compared to a single stand-alone prison.
