FCI Butner Medium I holds the distinction of being the original facility that started the Butner Federal Correctional Complex, opening its doors in 1976, roughly two decades before the rest of the complex was built out. It's a medium-security institution for male inmates, and for many years it operated essentially on its own before the government added the low-security unit and the medical center in 1995 and, later, a second medium-security facility in 2006. Because it predates the rest of the complex, Medium I is the facility with the longest institutional history at Butner, though detailed public records about specific events or incidents tied to this particular building are limited compared to what's documented for the medical center. As part of a large multi-facility complex, it shares grounds and general services with its sister institutions, but operates as its own unit with its own inmate population, housing, and staff, distinct from Medium II and the low-security and medical facilities nearby.
