FCI Berlin, located in Coos County in the far north of New Hampshire, is one of the newer facilities in the federal system. Construction wrapped up in late 2010, but the prison sat unused for roughly a year while Congress worked out budget issues that delayed the funding needed to actually staff and activate it. It finally opened on October 21, 2012, becoming the 118th institution in the Bureau of Prisons network. The project was a major undertaking for the area, costing over $270 million to build, and local officials had hoped it would bring a meaningful economic boost to the small city of Berlin and the surrounding region. It operates as a medium-security prison for male inmates, built to hold around 1,150 men in the main facility plus roughly 130 more in an attached minimum-security camp. Its first warden was Dr. Deborah Schult, succeeded by Lee Tatum about a year after opening. Over time it has housed a handful of inmates who drew national attention, including a well-known creationist ministry founder convicted of tax evasion and a former Massachusetts mayor convicted of corruption. For families, it's a relatively modern facility in a remote, mountainous part of northern New England, so travel distance is worth planning around.
